6 Simple Steps for Botanical Home Decor
Don’t quite have the time for a walk out in the fresh air? We know the feeling! Instead, why not try bringing nature to you?
Welcoming nature inside is typical of Scandinavian home decor. Floral patterns, houseplants, and clean, neutral colours feature in many Nordic homes. Luckily, it takes only a few simple steps to emulate this botanical home decor style!
Here’s our list! And, make sure you check out our stunning collection of botanical posters to get you started!
1. Use plants to add colour to neutral spaces
As we all know, Scandinavian interiors feature polished materials and monochrome colour schemes. This can look really chic. But if you’re not careful, it can also make spaces feel cold and lifeless. That’s where plants come in!
Use potted plants to add a burst of colour to your home decor! Green works well as an accent when placed alongside neutral tones. We especially love using large-leaved plants which have a deep and vibrant colour. They add the perfect green pop whilst still looking sophisticated.
Let’s get practical:
Choose your plants depending on how much time and energy you have to give them.
Large-leaved plants such as Banana, Palm, or Dracaena work brilliantly in the corner of rooms.
Try experimenting with different heights. Trailing plants such as Ivy look great placed up high on a shelf.
2. Decorate with botanical patterns
To pull your home decor together, look out for botanical patterns in decorative pieces. Think wallpaper, pillows, curtains, or even bedding.
And of course, take a look at our collection of botanical posters! We have so many designs to choose from. So, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect fit for your home.
Let’s get practical:
Palm leaves have become really popular in homeware design. It’s possible to pick up almost anything with palm leaves all over it!
For your kitchen, it’s a nice touch to decorate with botanical forms that are used in cooking. Just take a look at our Vintage Hand-painted Artichoke Poster.

3. Mix different shades of green
Now, it’s your chance to get creative! Try incorporating different shades of green in the same space. If your room has a neutral base, you could try out as made shades as you want!
You could also use other natural colours, like those imitating shades of wood. Deep yellows and oranges also look great with shades of green. Try it out!
Let’s get practical:
Put different plants next to each other which have different coloured leaves.
If you have wooden furniture, notice the different shades which make up the grain. Try using them as accent colours in the room.
Make sure you don’t go overboard! The whole point of Scandinavian interiors is that they look natural. Add just enough different shades to make the space look interesting, not overwhelming.
4. Make a Gallery Wall with plants and prints
A green paradise that doesn’t need to be taken care of? How is that even possible? We have the answer. Through a green and leafy wall of botanical posters! And even better, why not put some shelves up too so you can display real plants alongside?
For a feature wall like this, it’s nice to mix different sorts of plant designs. Some might be colourful. Others, beautifully simple line art flowers. Experiment and feels out the perfect balance for you.
Let’s get practical:
If you’re already putting up some shelving to display your plants on, why not use it for your poster too? Framed prints look super sophisticated leant against walls.

5. Make a vertical garden
Do you love plants but are stuck for space? The newest trend for both interiors and exteriors is really botanical! Ever heard of a vertical garden?
The brilliant thing about this craze is that almost everyone has the space for it! Even if you have a small balcony or corner of your living room that’s a bit bare. This tip is for you!
Pick up as many of your favourite green plants as you can get your hands on and you’re away!
Let’s get practical:
Small step-ladders are great to use for the shelves. This way, your vertical garden will have a relaxed, vintage feel.
Also, try using old fruit boxes! Go to your local fruit market and see if they have any going spare.
6. Hang plants from above
Another clever way to use indoor spaces is to hang items from the ceiling. The same goes for plants! Using this tip can make spaces feel much bigger than they appear. And, they can spruce up dull corners of rooms which often get forgotten about.
Just like our last tip, you can hang plants outside as well. In fact, hanging plants is a great idea if you have a balcony or limited outdoor space!
Let’s get practical:
You can make your own hanging accessories at home! Make a sling out of some string and place a pot inside. Make sure it’s secure and properly supported. All that’s left is to put a hook in the ceiling. Your very own, unique hanging plant accessory!
You could also repaint pots to make them more interesting to look at. Why not try a lovely, textured white pattern?
Remember, bringing botanical forms inside is all about creating the ambience of nature. Make sure your selections look relaxed and most importantly, natural!
