Top 15 Movie Posters of This Century

We can't think of a better way to explain the phrase “with great power comes great responsibility” as comparing it to the relationship there is between movie and its poster.

We're sure you've seen it before. There was a movie you desperately wanted to see, but suddenly you come across the poster and the desire is gone. It just feels like one of those film you find at the very bottom of a Netflix search.

Luckily, the last two decades have been a blast when it comes to graphic design. People are obsessed with good quality art and posters have become the ultimate, statement piece for your bedroom. Well, we made a list of the best movie posters for you, if you want to hang one right next to your Project Nord poster.

ONE THING AND THAT'S IT

MID 90s

Jonah Hill is for sure a name everybody recognizes. But did you know he recently switched from being in front of the camera guy to being the one behind it? His directorial debut Mid 90s, coming-of-age comedy-drama following story of 13-year-old boy hanging out with older group of skateboarders in 1990s Los Angeles, is not only a brilliant movie. This beautiful story brought into our lives one of the most aesthetically pleasing posters, designed by BLT Communications, California-based creative company responsible for some of the best graphic designs of this century.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME

If you're a fan of Indie movies, this is an obligatory one for you. Set in a dreamy Italian town in early 80s, this movie follows a story of Elio and Oliver, which is both, heartwarming and heartbreaking, but definitely one of the most beautiful ones we can think of. It went from small Indie movie to Oscar nominations in rocket speed and we are so grateful for the recognition this story got.

Behind the beautiful design of Call Me By Your Name is Roberta Federico, Italian Art Director standing behind some of the most stylish southern movies.

ROMA

Not only is this one of the greatest and most emotional movies to come out recently, the poster design is astonishing. It sort of makes us wish all of the posters would have black and white alternative.

The Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón blessed us with what’s probably going to be the best Netflix movie ever made. And behind that movie is some of the best art work in the movie industry. Netflix really won with Roma.

WORDS, COLOURS, LINES AND ALL THAT COMES WITH IT

JOY

It seems like David O. Russell loves to work with the trio Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro. No surprise there! But after seeing the poster for Silver Linings Playbook, we were a bit sceptical about the artwork accompanying his movies.

Fortunately, the Joy is clearly an exception. If until now people used to hang up posters with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, now it's going to be Leo and Jen.
The play between the picture, colours and font creates exceptional design and peaceful vibe, which is perfect for the scandinavian designed home.

LA LA LAND

Everything about Damien Chazelle's movies is something extra. “Almost” the Best Picture La La Land is no exception, and it had to be big since it's literally the return of a genre.
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling give outstanding performances in La La Land and even if you're not a fan of musicals, you won't regret watching this one, for sure!
The design of the poster is simple, yet it captures the vibe and the idea of the movie perfectly.

VICE

We love this poster. It's one of those designs that grab your attention right away!

You should also check out another version by the french creative agency Kingtooq and its Art Director Nicolas Caminade. Even though the original movie poster is amazing already, the Kingtooq took a step further and played around with font to make an exceptional piece of art.

By the way, the movie is amazing too!

SOMETHING  extra from the past

ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD

Just as the movie promises, you will be transformed into a different age. The most recent movie by Quentin Tarantino, the genius director behind iconic movies such as Pulp Fiction or Django Unchained, which by the way have some of the best poster design. Let's just be honest. Whatever project Tarantino takes upon, it’s on the best way to become legendary. The consistent design throughout Tarantino's art makes him and his movies the icons they are.

For the newest addition to the Tarantino movie family, the poster design for Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood carries out the very best of the 60's vibe, the time this movie is set in. We are begging you, get this one for your home! You won't have to worry about conversation starter ever again. And the best part? If you want, you can actually have a whole collection of posters from this movie.

THE NICE GUYS

Set in 1970s Los Angels, this movie's definitely worth mentioning. The brilliant combination of crime-story and hilarious duo Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling is more or less everything you need to see in a movie. We are longing for a sequel for The Nice Guys, but we know combination like this happens once in a lifetime.

If you like the perfect balance of colours, fonts and figures, this movie poster is the right design addition for your interior.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC

This movie is totally unlike anything we have ever seen. Viggo Mortensen is an exceptional actor and he proved it once again. Taking on the role of a father who raises his children outside the society in a very untraditional, but somehow the correct way.
And even though Captain Fantastic is set in the present, the vibe still remains very 60s like, which made this movie poster earn a place on our list. The harmony of vivid colours and well mastered graphics made it one of the best posters of this century.

THE BLESSING 2014 WAS

THE IMITATION GAME

When it comes to movies, 2014 was definitely one of the best years. And even though the perfect movie doesn't always come with the most amazing poster, this time we have been lucky.
If you haven't seen The Imitation Game yet, you have no idea what you're missing out on! But be ready, cause this movie will make even the toughest of us cry.
Brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch is the star of the poster and the simple design captures the essence of the movie and said everything which had to be said. This is definitely art you want to have in your apartment!

BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE)

Another brilliant movie! Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was directed by the outstanding spanish director Alejandro González Iñárritu, this movie might not be for everyone. It is listed as a comedy, but if you are not familiar with Iñárritu's approach, you will be so confused!

However, the poster is simple and defines everything the movie is. I mean, Birdman, that's literally what the movie is.
And although we are used to the photographic posters, this one took on a more graphic look. So if you're a graphic design collector, this poster have to be yours!

GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

Yet another exciting design. The tone of the poster perfectly complements the tone and vibe of this movie. It's almost theatrical. Wes Anderson’s movies are typical for having an edge to the story, an atypical approach. Same as Birdman, it is somewhat surreal, so the graphic illustration gives the poster the right kind of form.

If your home is blooming with colour, the poster for Grand Budapest Hotel will be the perfect addition to your decor collection. We can already imagine it hanging above your sofa!

OFF TO THE SPACE WE GO

FIRST MAN

Let's stay up in space for a bit longer. Damien Chazelle directed a number of great movies. It sort of feels like he is aiming for that Tarantino level, and is one of the few people in the movie industry who's realized that it's not about quantity, but quality.
That's underlined by the fact that not only the movies themselves, but everything around them is given a great deal of attention and consideration.

First Man, movie starring Ryan Gosling, which yes, is aesthetically pleasing on it's own, tells the story of Neil Armstrong and the first landing of humanity on the Moon. If you take on a story that big, you have to go big with everything around it. And First Man poster is definitely a big one.

AD ASTRA

Two things: Brad Pitt and space. That's it! You don't even have to look at anything else ever again in your life. Well, that might be an exaggeration, but believe us, this poster is for you!
If you're a fan of masterpieces such as Interstellar or the all time classic Star Wars, you probably know about Ad Astra and can't wait to see it, same as we do.

Well until then, you can at least decorate your home with the official poster, which is one of those works paying tribute to the art of photography. Or you can choose to go with more graphic version, the options are countless, but equally good.

THE MARTIAN

There are so many versions of The Martian movie poster, it's hard to choose the best one. But we made the effort and so, here you go! This is the best graphic version poster of the Oscar nominated movie.
And if you haven't seen the movie you have to fix that mistake because it's hilarious and it will definitely keep you on the edge of your chair!

If you are missing any of these movies on your watch list, well, then we just made your weekend plans. We really hope you found the inspiration you’ve been looking for. Let us know which one of these posters is your favourite and if you know about any other amazing movie art, please share, because sharing is caring!
